6 Simple Ways to Help Planned Parenthood

When he who shall not be named was sworn in as Not My President, I felt like the world had ended and the decades of progress made for the issues I cared about would regress - environmental sustainability, alternative fuels, wildlife conservation and Planned Parenthood. Ever wonder why conservatives are so against Planned Parenthood? It could be conservative values, or it could be their financial interests in private health care. Whatever it is, knowing they vowed to “defund” Planned Parenthood and push hateful, dangerous policies in it's place left me feeling hopeless.

When I saw buzz around the Women's March in January 2017 I knew I had to make a stand for health care euqality. At the time, I was new to Los Angeles and just started a job in West Hollywood, but my friend from Chicago and fellow blogger, Amanda of the Travallure was going with friends. Wearing a leather jacket, pink bandana and Hope Care Bear in tow, I marched to City Hall with 750,000 other people - the energy was electric. For the first time in what felt like a lifetime of T/P nightmares, I finally had hope. We are strong. Our movement is powerful. And we won’t back down. 

While I don't currently use Planned Parenthood's services, I've always looked up to my mom for supporting them with monthly donations and ongoing activism in person and online. Below, are some of the ways you can support Planned Parenthood so they can support millions of women, girls, boys and men worldwide.

1. Donate to Planned Parenthood

Donating supports their health centers, where they deliver vital reproductive health care, like birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment. To help fight political attacks and strengthen advocacy for reproductive health and rights, such as access to sex education; safe, legal abortion; and health care at Planned Parenthood health centers, donate to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

2. Speak Out Against Hate

Planned Parenthood's patients include many of the marginalized groups that T/P targeted: immigrants, LGBTQA, Muslims, women, anyone who isn't light skinned and more. Everyone deserves health care and Planned Parenthood is an amazing resource to both men and women providing free care in a safe and welcoming place. Whether online or at an event, share your solidarity with the communities T/P have attacked and explain why you believe every single person (or earthling) is deserving of respect, dignity, and equal rights under the law. 

3. Make a Health Care Appointment

Everyone is welcome to get health care at Planned Parenthood, no matter your sex or age. One of the best ways to support Planned Parenthood is by stopping by to make your next reproductive health care appointment. Need birth control? Gyno exam? STD tests? Planned Parenthood can provide those for you, and much more. One thing I did not know is that several Planned Parenthood health centers also provide hormone replacement therapy for trans patients.

4. Volunteer for Planned Parenthood

You can also support Planned Parenthood with your time and energy by signing up as a volunteer. If you’re interested in political activism, go to PPaction.org/volunteer to get involved with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. If you’re in college, join Planned Parenthood Generation Action and become a leader in the movement.

5. Share Your Defiance

Using #WeWontGoBack on social media shows you reject hate and refuse to politicians erase the rights we’ve fought so hard to secure. 

6. Sign Up for Email & Texts

Join Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s email list to stay on top of news and issues. The email alerts also help you learn how to get involved with campaigns that advance and protect reproductive health.
